Roller Derby Action at Bay Skate, Napier

Roller Derby is a fast-paced contact team sport that requires speed, strategy and athleticism. The sport began in 2001, and has been growing fast with more than 1000 leagues worldwide, including Napier's own Bay City Rollers, which started out in 2009.

Roller Derby Anywhere Anytime

Roller Derby's popularity is in large part due to the ease of setting up a flat track – it can be done on any flat surface that's suitable for skating, such as skating rinks, basketball courts, parking lots, and even airplane hangars. The DIY spirit that drives the sport allows roller derby leagues to create their own unique identities and adapt their structures accordingly.

Bay City Rollers Roller Derby

The Bay City Rollers run Hawke's Bay's original premier competitive roller derby league, comprising team members from both Napier and Hastings. Formed in late 2009, what began as a handful of dedicated skaters teaching themselves the basics of derby via the Internet now boasts over 60 members, and that number is constantly growing.

Iron Maidens, Twisted Sisters & Guns N' Roses

The Bay City Rollers (BCR) is comprised of two competitive bouting teams: The Iron Maidens, representing Hawke's Bay, and; the development team, the Twisted Sisters. In 2015 BCR also added a junior roller derby squad – Guns N' Roses, who are well on their way to becoming the bouting skaters of the future.

Nails, Lipstick & Hard Training

Now, don't be fooled by the hot pink nail polish and lipstick, these girls are a force to be reckoned with on the track. There's a real sense of sisterhood within this tight-knit and diverse group of women, with their team of coaches at the helm training 'em hard.
